General usage up

Search for

The Search For panel is different for each search tool, and is to be used to narrow down a search.
In these fields, the characters * or % can be used as wildcards.

WQL

WQL is a free-search field, where additional search criteria’s can be specified.

The text in this field must comply with the WQL syntax, which is a SQL-like syntax. The text that is entered in this field is added as a part of the WHERE clause in the WQL statement that is generated, when a search is started.


Note
Wildcard searches are not supported on Windows 2000 or earlier, and queries with a wildcard will result in 0 results.

Device filter

With this field, one can specify which computers to search.

The character * or ? can be used as wildcards, where * represents one or more characters, and ? is a wildcard for a single character. See Table 1 below for examples.

Device filter Description
* All computers are searched
*server All computers that have a name that ends with server are searched
?server All computers that have a name that ends with server, and starts with a single character are searched - for instance aserver, but not a_server
pc* All computers that have a name that starts with pc are searched
com?u?er For instance, computers named computer, comxu3er and com1u_er are searched but not computter or computers

Settings

Auto Timeout
[Enabled by default]
If this option is enabled, searches will automatically terminate after 3 minutes. In case that this period is too short, unclick this option, and the search tool will shift to a 60 minute timeout period
Include offline devicesIf enabled, then the Device filter will include offline computers, when wildcards are used to select devices.
Connect AsSet a different username/password
All devices in a search will use the same Connect As username/password
Use device securityWhen this option is set, then the tool will use the login credentials that are defined for the device that is to be searched.
Once the search has completed, it will be shown what username that was used for the particular device.
This option will supersede Connect As settings.
Latest QueryAfter a search, the WQL statement is remembered, and this option can either show it or launch the query in the WQL browser
CopyClipboard
The search result is copied to the Windows clipboard. The data are formatted, and can be inserted directly into your application of choice.
HTML
The search result is exported to a HTML file, and shown automatically
CloseCloses the search tool

Action
The Action menu is different for each search tool, and is described in the section for the particular search tool

Stick
If set, then DomainScan will not reuse the window, but launch another window, so that its possible to launch several searches at the same time.
The window is automatically locked during a search

Search For

Name Share name
Description Share description
Limit share type Select this option, to reduce the share types to search for

Share Types:

  • Disk drive: All normal shares
  • Print queue: All shared printers
  • Device: All general devices
  • IPC: Inter Process communications devices
  • Disk Drive Admin: '$-shares', i.e. administrative shares
  • Print Queue Admin: Print Queue shares (administrative)
  • Device Admin: General devices (administrative)
  • IPC Admin: Inter Process communications devices (administrative)

  • Actions
    Explore DomainScan will try to Explore the selected share. Printer and IPC shares cannot be explored, due to the fact that they are special shares.
    Select a share and either right click or click on the Action menu to select options


    File up


    Search For

    Filename The filename to search for
    Path All computers are searched
    Drive Select the drive to search
    Extension The extension to search for (without the leading dot)
    Include file size in search If you want to search for files above or below a certain size, check this box, and type the size of the file in the File Size box
    Exclude directories Omits folders from the result, in case a folder name corresponded to the search (for instance a search for the term 'winnt')


    Note
    Empty searches or full-drive searches are prohibited due to the fact that it would cause DomainScan to return all files and directories on the computer or an entire drive

    Actions

    Open File Open the file in the current location.
    Copy File Copy the selected file to a location that can be chosen. Target locations can either be the local computer, from where the search is performed, or a remote computer.
    Note: Folders cannot be copied
    Delete File Delete the file.
    Note: Folders cannot be deleted
    Explore DomainScan will try to Explore the folder, where the selected file is located.
    Select a file or folder and either right click or click on the Action menu to select options


    Multimedia codecs up


    Search For

    Description Codec description (for instance Windows Media Audio)
    Name Name of the codec ie. the full path and file name of the codec (for instance c:\windows\system32\divx.dll)
    Manufacturer Codec Manufacturer (for instance Microsoft Corporation)
    Exclude video drivers The search does not return any video codecs
    Exclude audio drivers The search does not return any audio codecs

    Actions
    Explore DomainScan will try to Explore the selected codec, ie. the folder where the codec is installed.
    Select a codec and either right click or click on the Action menu to select options


    Process up


    Search For

    Caption Caption of the process.
    In most cases, this is the name of the executable file
    Executable Path The path from where the process is launched
    Priority Select this option if you want to search for processes above or below a given priority.

    Actions
    Set Priority Set a new priority for the process. Not all priorities can be applied to a process.
    Terminate Process Kill the selected process without any warnings.

    Note
    Use this option with extra care, because termination of a process may result in an unstable or unresponsive system.
    Create Process Select an executable file (for instance notepad) and press Ok to execute the file on the selected computer.

    A network file can be specified, and in that case, the file will be executed from its current location.

    If a local file is specified, the selected computer will try to launch the same file on the selected computer, if it can be found in the same location.
    Select a process and either right click or click on the Action menu to select options


    Service up


    Search For

    Name The name of the service that is shown in the Service Manager, for instance VgaSave.
    Caption The caption (description) of the service, for instance VGA Display Controller.
    State The state of the service.
    Type Type of service.
    Startup How the service is started.

    Actions
    Change startup Select a new startup method for the service.
    Note: Boot and system can only be assigned to device drivers.
    Pause service Pause the service (the service must be running and the ‘Accept Pause’ parameter must be true).
    Resume service Resume the service (the service must be paused).
    Start service Set a new priority for the process. Not all priorities can be applied to a process.
    Stop service Kill the selected process without any warnings.
    Use with extra care, because termination of a process may result in an unstable or unresponsive system.
    Uninstall service Removes the service. The executables are not removed, but the service settings are removed from the registry.
    Select a service and either right click or click on the Action menu to select options
