DomainScan - Server monitoring

The WMI interface, which DomainScan and other management tools use (for instance, Microsoft Operations Manager or Microsoft System Management Server), is a powerful management interface, due to the fact that all newer Microsoft applications has a WMI-interface that can expose useful hardware and software information.

Information is retrieved by using SQL-like statements. These statements are called WQL queries (SQL for WMI), and can be used to extract information about both hardware and software from both the local and remote computers. WQL supports basic SQL – see the WMI information page at the GH Software website.

Note
The WMI interface is natively supported in Windows 2000 SP3 and newer operating systems. On earlier systems, it’s necessary to install the WMI core components from Microsoft.

Note
As of Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008, one must enable remote WMI and create an exception in the firewall in order for WMI to be accessed remotely.
See this tech doc for details

Usage up
Enter the query in the Query field, and select computer(s) and namespace. Then press Run query to let DomainScan start the query on the selected computer(s).

The WMI browser can run the query on multiple computers simultaneously. See the table below for examples

Device filter Description
* All computers are searched
*server All computers that have a name that ends with server are searched
?server All computers that have a name that ends with server, and starts with a single character are searched - for instance aserver, but not a_server
pc* All computers that have a name that starts with pc are searched
com?u?er For instance, computers named computer, comxu3er and com1u_er are searched but not computter or computers
Device filter. Use , or ; to seperate devices

Select the WMI name space to search in Name space field, and type the WQL query in the Query field, and press Run.

To query the local computer, type . as computername. For any other computer, type the name of the computer.

If the query returns successfully (data is returned), the query will be remembered, and the returned data will be shown in the Data area.

Edit: Click on this label to launch an editor where WMI queries can be edited.

Options

Include offline devicesIf enabled, then the Device filter will include offline computers, when wildcards are used to select devices.
Connect AsSet a different username/password
All devices in a search will use the same Connect As username/password
Use device securityWhen this option is set, then the tool will use the login credentials that are defined for the device that is to be searched.
Once the search has completed, it will be shown what username that was used for the particular device.
This option will supersede Connect As settings.
CopyClipboard
The search result is copied to the Windows clipboard. The data are formatted, and can be inserted directly into your application of choice.
HTML
The search result is exported to a HTML file, and shown automatically
CloseCloses the WMI browser

Stick
If set then DomainScan will not reuse the window, but launch another window, so that its possible to launch several searches at the same time.
The window is automatically locked during a search
