SNMP

The SNMP monitor is designed in such a way that it corresponds to a GET request.

An OID (Object Identifier) must be sent to the device in question, and because of the fact that the OID must be unique for GET commands, one dataset will be returned.
DomainScan will then extract the Data part of the dataset, and compare it with the comparison value, and create an event if this comparison fails.

The OID can be either a numeric value like .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 or the textual interpretation. For the mentioned OID this would translate to system.sysDescr.0

Other OID’s can extract other types of information, and because of the widespread implementation across platforms and networks types, SNMP queries be used to extract almost all hardware information, such as network traffic, utilization, users etc.

SNMP is similar to WMI in regards to the type of data that can be extracted. They’re both created as vendor-independent management platforms, but SNMP is more widely implemented.

WMI is however easier for users to operate due to the SQL-like syntax, and WMI monitors are recommended when a Windows based device are to be monitored due to extended security and better implementation in Windows.

In Examples, examples can be found, which might help creating a desired monitor, and in External resources some helpful links to external sites with SNMP documentation and examples are listed.
